Expert tips for Cloud Engineer interviews

1

Architecture questions dominate cloud engineer interviews — practice designing for high availability, fault tolerance, scalability, and security.

2

Networking fundamentals are critical: VPCs, subnets, route tables, security groups, NACLs, load balancers, DNS, and CDN.

3

Cloud security is increasingly tested: IAM policies, encryption at rest and in transit, secrets management, and compliance frameworks (SOC2, PCI).

4

Cost optimization shows senior engineering maturity: know reserved instances, spot/preemptible instances, right-sizing, and storage tiering.

Cloud Engineer Interview FAQ

AWS has the largest market share and most job openings — prioritize AWS if you're entering the field. Google Cloud is preferred for AI/ML and data engineering workloads. Azure dominates in enterprise environments with Microsoft ecosystems. At senior levels, cloud-agnostic architecture knowledge matters more than platform-specific expertise.

Most commonly tested: EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, RDS, Lambda, EKS, ECS, CloudFormation, Route53, CloudWatch, API Gateway, and DynamoDB. For architecture questions, know when to use which service and the trade-offs between alternatives (e.g., RDS vs DynamoDB vs Aurora vs Redshift).

Terraform is the most widely used IaC tool and is expected for most cloud engineering roles. Know Terraform state management, modules, workspaces, remote backends, and the provider ecosystem. HashiCorp Terraform Associate certification demonstrates baseline knowledge; practical Terraform experience in projects is more important.

AWS Well-Architected Framework defines best practices across 6 pillars: Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, Cost Optimization, and Sustainability. Interviewers often ask you to architect solutions 'following AWS Well-Architected best practices.' Know the key principles of each pillar and be ready to apply them to design questions.
