AI Engineer
Interview Guide

AI engineering is one of the fastest-growing roles in tech. AI engineers build applications and systems powered by AI models — particularly LLMs. Interviews combine software engineering depth with AI/ML knowledge, prompt engineering, RAG system design, and AI application architecture.

Expert tips for AI Engineer interviews

1

RAG system design is the most common AI engineer interview topic — practice designing retrieval-augmented systems with chunking, embedding, vector search, and reranking.

2

AI evaluation is a critical differentiator: know how to design evaluation pipelines using LLM-as-judge, human evaluation, and automated metrics.

3

Prompt engineering depth matters: few-shot learning, chain-of-thought, structured outputs, and prompt injection mitigation.

4

Understand the full AI application stack: model APIs, context management, memory systems, tool use, and agentic frameworks.

AI Engineer Interview FAQ

RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) combines LLMs with external knowledge retrieval to reduce hallucinations and incorporate proprietary data. The architecture: embed documents into vectors, store in a vector database (Pinecone, Weaviate, Chroma), embed the user query, retrieve relevant chunks, and pass them to the LLM as context. RAG system design is the most common AI engineering interview question.

Pinecone (managed, most popular), Weaviate (open-source, strong hybrid search), Qdrant (open-source, high performance), Chroma (lightweight, development-friendly), and pgvector (PostgreSQL extension — convenient for existing Postgres users). For interviews, understand indexing algorithms (HNSW, IVF), similarity metrics (cosine, dot product, Euclidean), and filtering capabilities.

AI engineering introduces non-determinism, probabilistic outputs, and evaluation challenges that traditional software engineering doesn't face. AI applications must handle prompt injection, hallucinations, context window limits, latency, and cost at scale. Software testing approaches must evolve: unit tests don't fully capture LLM behavior — evaluation datasets, human review, and LLM-as-judge are needed.

An AI agent is an LLM-powered system that can use tools, execute multi-step plans, and take actions in the world (call APIs, write code, browse the web). Key components: the LLM reasoning engine, a tool registry, memory (short-term context + long-term storage), and a planning/orchestration loop. Frameworks: LangChain, LlamaIndex, AutoGen, and CrewAI. Challenges: reliability (agents fail more than single LLM calls), cost, latency, and tool error handling.
